Our diesel locomotive fleet

No. 1 - 'Amanda'
Named after GLR owner John Gartell’s daughter, 'Amanda' is a twin-cab 'Bo--Bo' diesel hydraulic locomotive.

Its power is supplied by a Perkins 6354 engine via a two speed direct drive
hydraulic gearbox to both bogies. This locomotive originated from the Southend Pier tramway and was rebuilt in the GLR workshops with a new body to resemble the mainline Crompton class 33/1 diesel electric locomotives, several of which are still in service on heritage lines.

Amanda is one of the regular performers on Open Days, and occasionally pulls 'The Pines Express'.

No. 2 - 'Andrew'
Named after GLR owner John Gartell’s son, 'Andrew' is a 60 h.p. Baguley-Drewry diesel hydraulic locomotive which was built in 1973 and arrived at the GLR in March, 2007 where it was overhauled and modified to operate on the GLR.

This powerful locomotive is believed to have originated from the nearby M.O.D R.A.F. Chilmark in Wiltshire where it bore the number NG47.

This is the third GLR locomotive to carry this combination of number and name - earlier examples having been superceded by more modern and powerful locomotives to cater for the heavier trains now running on the GLR.

No. 5 - 'Alison'
'Alison' is a 75 h.p. diesel hydraulic locomotive and was built in 1983 by Alan Keef Engineering - a specialist narrow gauge train building company.

A replacement engine was installed into 'No 5' as when it arrived on the GLR as it  didn't have one!  The new engine was a 4-cylinder Deutz Air-Cooled diesel.

After several years of front-line service, 'No.5' had a major overhaul at the GLR workshops and, on open days, has now become the standby locomotive and acts as the station 'pilot' loco at Common Lane.

'No.5' is also usually the first choice of locomotive used to operate our maintenance trains.
