Our rolling stock
The Gartell Light Railway is a 2 foot gauge 'narrow gauge' railway. Whilst our trains are smaller than those seen on the national network we operate them to equally high standards of safety and reliability.
The Gartell Light Railway operates a mixed locomotive fleet comprising of 2 purpose built steam locomotives and 3 diesel locomotives. For passengers we operate a fleet of 9 coaches which usually operate in 3 coach trains - two of these coaches have been adapted to carry disabled passengers. For added interest on open days, we sometimes operate a small fleet of 'traditional' goods wagons and guards vans. To assist with our track and lineside maintenance we have a range of purpose built wagons including a ballast carrying hopper wagon, a flat wagon with a hydraulic hoist, a tool van, weedspraying wagon and a range of flat bogie wagons for those awkward loads!
All our locomotives, coaches and wagons have either been made or refurbished in our own railway workshops, regularly maintained to exacting standards and are operated by our trained and experienced volunteer staff.
Further details of our locomotives and rolling stock can be found in our GLR book - 'The Gartell Light Railway...the story so far' which is available from the GLR shop or via mail order direct from the GLR.
